DoubleTree by Hilton Bath leading the way with three eco-certification achievements

Contact Us

DoubleTree by Hilton Bath benefits from a strong, strategic location in central Bath, set on the banks of the River Avon and just half a mile from The Roman Baths. The comfortable 176-bedroom hotel is located just 10 minutes from the railway station and close to Bath Rugby Ground, making it an ideal choice for both leisure and business travellers.

In 2020, the hotel unveiled its redesign, following a renovation and remodelling of the architecture and interiors. In 2022, it joined Pandox’s curated hotel portfolio, with Axiom Hospitality driving environmental responsibility and sustainable hotel operations.

The hotel worked with Mission: Net Zero to develop and deliver a measurable ESG roadmap, complemented with a full suite of advisory services to support their dedicated ‘Green Team’ at every stage of their eco-accreditation journey. After just two years, the team secured Green Tourism Gold, along with Green Key and Greengage ECOsmart Gold certifications.

Brady Smith, General Manager of DoubleTree by Hilton Bath, explains, “Mission: Net Zero have helped us to develop our green goals, providing guidance and training to our hotel operations team, leading first to Green Tourism Bronze accreditation, then Silver, and now the highest Gold eco certification. As we move forward, we hope to take learnings from our effort and use data to help us review and refine our practices further, utilising training and technology to help us achieve our environmental goals.”

Award-winning sustainability solutions

Together with the Green Team DoubleTree by Hilton Bath developed and delivered a targeted programme of environmental, sustainability and social impact policies, procedures and initiatives.

Examples of sustainable initiatives include:

  • Implemented bulk amenities across all bedroom bathrooms, eradicating single-use plastics
  • Green Daily Delegate Rate (DDR) Package, in line with Hilton’s Meeting with Purpose programme, includes Environmental Impact
  • Report, carbon offsetting options, and carbon-conscious menus for each meeting hosted
  • Klimato carbon labelling: every menu dish comes with a carbon footprint rating from A to E, calculated to reflect its CO2e impact
  • Knights Beekeeping: by investing in two managed beehives, they’re helping to restore biodiversity by protecting & replenishing honey bee populations
  • Community Litter picks: Great British Spring Clean with Bath BID and engagement with Axiom Hospitality’s Green Champion event
  • D&I Training: Proud Certified through Booking.com, ensuring LGBTQ+ guests feel welcome, valued, and free to be themselves
  • Charitable partnerships: Collaboration with the Down’s Syndrome Association and Workfit to provide employment opportunities for individuals with Down’s Syndrome
  • Hilton’s Travel with Purpose programme, which includes options for guests such as opting out of housekeeping and reusing towels to reduce energy and water consumption
  • Screening and selection: ensures ethical assessment of all products and services i.e. using FSC paper products, ethically sourced F&B, and a chemical-free cleaning system
  • Waste controlling technology: maximises the energy and water efficiency such as Passive Infrared Sensors (PIRs) installed in all public areas, water flow restrictors in the rooms and smart water meters to detect leaks and reduce waste

Chiara Framassi, Sustainability Advisor at mission : net zero, said, “It’s been a pleasure supporting the Green Team – they’ve done an impressive job implementing robust environmental policies, set by both Pandox and Axiom, which firmly embed sustainability into their core operations. On the social side, they’ve established such a strong presence within the community. It’s great to see!”

Celebrating the Green Key award

Achieving three prestigious eco label certifications is a testament to the hotels’ dedication and commitment to minimising their environmental impact in business whilst providing exceptional service to guests.

Next steps and goals: year ahead

Looking ahead, the team at DoubleTree by Hilton Bath will continue to track consumption and measure their carbon footprint. Environmental, sustainability and social impact targets will be measured by Hilton’s LightStay programme, aligned with Travel With Purpose – Hilton’s ESG strategy, to drive responsible travel and tourism globally.

Actions and targets include:

  • Target of recycling 65% of total hotel waste in 2025, and reducing waste to 1kg per guest night
  • Explore the possibility of using Uber WeKnow digital terminal to inform guests about local green spaces and sustainable travel options
  • Continue to effectively manage water usage ensuring it stays below 9 litres per minute
  • Improve signage throughout the hotel informing international guests of sustainability policies and initiatives
  • Working with the Head Chef to explore further enhancements in reducing food waste
